Urethral Stricture

Urethrography & Uroflometry

Urethrography is a radiological investigation in which a radio opaque dye is used to opacify urethral lumen and then X-ray pictures are taken to explore the exact site, extent and size of urethral stricture. This is the commonly used investigation.

Types of Urethrography :

Ascending or Retrograde Urethrography Descending Urethrography

Descending Urethrography

In this test the rate of passage of urine through urethra is measured. Flow, less than 10ml/sec with a flat box type of curve suggests a stricture in the urethra.

Ultrasound Sonography

Ultrasound SonographyUltrasound Sonography of the urethra is carried out by placing an ultrasound probe along the length of the penis to determine the size of the stricture, degree of narrowing, and length of the stricture. This being a non-invasive procedure does not require any special preparation.

Urethroscopy & Cystoscopy

Urethroscopy & CystoscopyAn endoscope is inserted into the urethra for direct visualization of the lumen of the urethra and urinary bladder. The procedure has to be conducted under all aseptic precautions using local lubricant and anesthetic gels. Anatomical or structural abnormalities are directly visualized. If necessary, biopsy can also be taken.

Many times a stricture is diagnosed when this is performed for other problem such as TURP or Bladder stone.

CT / MRI Scan

CT / MRI Scan3D CT / MRI scans are useful investigations for pelvic fracture urethral injuries to determine the site and size of hematoma due to injury.
